China has issued a warning to Donald Trump and the United States after the president announced his plans for a future ‘Golden Dome’ missile defence programme.
Trump outlined his ideas for the latest defence plan from the Oval Office in the White House on Tuesday (May 20), telling reporters that he hopes to move quickly on the idea which will put US weapons in space for the very first time.
The goal of the Golden Dome is to help the US to intercept missiles – ‘even if they are launched from space’, the POTUS explained.
General Michael Guetlein, who currently serves as the vice chief of space operations, will be in charge of overseeing the progress of the Golden Dome, which is set to cost $175 billion dollars.

What is the Golden Dome?
Following warnings from the Pentagon about the new, advanced missiles developed by China and Russia, the focus of the Golden Dome is to both detect and stop missiles at four specific stages:
- Before a launch
- During the earliest stage of flight
- In the middle of their course
- In the final minutes as they approach a target
Planners at the Pentagon have spent months coming up with options for interceptors, with one US official cited by the PA News Agency explaining that they came up with ‘medium, high and extra high choices’ based on cost, with differences varying on satellites, sensors, and space-based interceptors.
The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that space-based components of the programme alone could cost as much as $542 billion over the next 20 years, with Trump requesting an initial $25 billion for the programme.

What has China said about the Golden Dome?
After news of Trump’s plans came to light, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning issued a warning on the implications and potential outcomes of the Golden Dome.
Mao said the Golden Dome carries ‘strong offensive implications’, and increases the risk of outer space becoming militarized.
On top of that, Mao said it also heightens the risks of an arms race.
The spokesperson said: “The United States, in pursuing a ‘US-first’ policy, is obsessed with seeking absolute security for itself. This violates the principle that the security of all countries should not be compromised and undermines global strategic balance and stability. China is seriously concerned about this.”
Mao went as far as urging Washington to abandon the development of the Golden Dome altogether.

Why does the US need the Golden Dome?
Since China and Russia have already put offensive weapons in space, including satellites that can disable critical US satellites, the US has been left vulnerable to attack.
General Chance Saltzman, head of the US Space Force, has said that the Golden Dome and its weapons ‘represent new and emerging requirements for missions that have never before been accomplished by military space organizations’.
However, Air Force Secretary Troy Meink has said the programme is ‘still in the conceptual stage’ for the time being.

President Donald Trump has taken a swipe at both President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine, as he pushed once more for a peace deal to be signed to bring the war in Eastern Europe to an end.
Taking to Truth Social, he posted: “President Putin of Russia doesn’t want to have a Cease Fire Agreement with Ukraine, but rather wants to meet on Thursday, in Turkey, to negotiate a possible end to the BLOODBATH. Ukraine should agree to this, IMMEDIATELY.
“At least they will be able to determine whether or not a deal is possible, and if it is not, European leaders, and the U.S., will know where everything stands, and can proceed accordingly!
“I’m starting to doubt that Ukraine will make a deal with Putin, who’s too busy celebrating the Victory of World War ll, which could not have been won (not even close!) without the United States of America. HAVE THE MEETING, NOW!!!”
It comes as Putin has proposed restarting direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on Thursday (May 15), ‘without preconditions’.
Speaking to reporters in the Kremlin in the early hours of Sunday, Putin proposed to ‘restart’ peace talks Russia and Ukraine held in 2022.
“We are committed to serious negotiations with Ukraine,” Putin said, adding that he does not rule out agreeing to a ceasefire later, in the course of direct talks with Ukraine.
His remarks came after leaders from four major European countries threatened to ratchet up pressure on Putin if he does not accept an unconditional 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine that they offered on Saturday in a strong show of unity with Kyiv.
The leaders of France, the UK, Germany and Poland said their proposal for a ceasefire to start on Monday was supported by Trump, whom they had briefed over the phone earlier in the day.
Putin on Sunday once again said the Kremlin needs a truce that would lead to a ‘lasting peace’ instead of one that would allow Ukraine to rearm and mobilise more men into its armed forces.
He said he would speak to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and ask him to facilitate the peace talks this Thursday, saying ‘those who truly want peace cannot but support’ his proposal to restart the peace talks.
Putin did not directly address this latest ceasefire proposal, but Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Saturday told CNN that Moscow will need to consider the proposal.

Earlier that day, Peskov reiterated Russia’s claim that it was ready for peace talks with Ukraine ‘without preconditions’ and accused Kyiv of blocking those.
Russia’s own unilateral three-day ceasefire, declared for the 80th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany expired on Saturday, and Ukraine said Russian forces have repeatedly violated it.
In March, the US proposed an immediate, limited 30-day truce, which Ukraine accepted, but the Kremlin has held out for terms more to its liking.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking to reporters alongside the European leaders in Kyiv, called their meeting ‘a very important signal’.
In a joint statement, as published on Zelenskyy’s official website, the five leaders called for a ceasefire ‘lasting at least 30 days’ from Monday, to make room for a diplomatic push to end the war.
“An unconditional ceasefire by definition cannot be subject to any conditions. If Russia calls for such conditions, this can only be considered as an effort to prolong the war and undermine diplomacy,” the statement read.

Celine Dion has issued a stern warning to Donald Trump and his team after they used one of her songs during a rally.
With the 2024 election now in full swing, both Trump and Kamala Harris are conducting rallies across the US.
Trump is known for having a song blasting out as he takes to the stage and it’s not exactly uncommon for the former president to have a little dance to the tunes too.
The list of musicians Donald Trump has upset by using their songs without permission at his rallies includes (deep breath) Adele, Bruce Springsteen, Sir Elton John, Pharrell Williams, Phil Collins and Village People.
And now Dion has spoken out against the former President too after the use of one of her songs at his rallies.

During a presidential campaign rally in Montana, Trump decided to use Dion’s classic ‘My Heart Will Go On’, playing a video of the singer performing the classic tune to the crowd.
However, the Titanic hit was seemingly played without Dion’s permission and her team has now urged Trump to think twice about using the track again.
A statement posted on behalf of Dion and her record label read: “Today, Celine Dion’s management team and her record label, Sony Music Entertainment Canada Inc, became aware of the unauthorised usage of the video, recording, musical performance, and likeness of Celine Dion singing ‘My Heart Will Go On’ at a Donald Trump / JD Vance campaign rally in Montana.
“In no way is this use authorised, and Celine Dion does not endorse this or any similar use.
“… And really, THAT song?”
Amid her ongoing struggles with stiff person syndrome (SPS), Dion made her return to the stage with an incredible performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony last month.
The 56-year-old performed a beautiful rendition of Edith Piaf’s ‘L’Hymne A L’Amour’ from the Eiffel Tower to conclude the Opening Ceremony.
One US publication claimed Dion would receive a whopping $2 million for performing just one song at the opening of the games.

However, those reports were quickly shut down by the Olympics themselves.
A statement by them read: “Contrary to information relayed in the media, the performers who will perform during the Paris 2024 Games ceremonies will not receive a fee for their performance.
“This commitment on their part – under these conditions – reflects their desire to participate in a historic event for France and for the world of sport.
“Furthermore, Paris 2024 will cover all technical production and performance organization costs, as is customary.
“Paris 2024 reminds that the budget of the organizing committee is 96 percent financed by private funding and that at no time do public contributions pay the artistic teams.”

US President Donald Trump has commented Chinese President Xi Jinping knows ‘exactly what has to be done’ amid the ongoing tariff war, while also referring to secret weapons.
Yesterday (April 9), China announced it would be introducing an additional 84 percent tariff on all goods imported into the country from the US following Trump’s decision to impose 104 percent tariffs.
Trump then hit back, increasing the tariffs on Chinese goods even further, taking to his social media platform, Truth Social, to call out the ‘lack of respect’ from China to ‘the World’s Markets’ and reveal he’d be raising the tariff to 125 percent ‘effectively immediately’.
“At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the USA and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable,” he added.
And it would appear Trump isn’t quite done yet with his words of warning.
Trump praised President of China Xi Jinping to reporters while at the Oval Office, stating: “Xi is a smart guy and we’ll end up making a very good deal. [He is] one of the smartest people in the world.”
Trump powered on, going on to acknowledge the ‘weapons that nobody even knows’ about that the US supposedly possess – subtle.
Then he got back to praising Jingping, resolving: “Xi is a man who knows exactly what has to be done, he loves his country. We will get a phone call at some point and then it’s off to the races.”
Ah yes, comments almost just as stressful as Trump’s capitalization of his tweets.
While Trump is busy playing tariff table tennis with China, other countries impacted by the tariffs can actually breathe a slight sigh of relief – the POTUS revealing he was issuing a 90-day pause on other countries’ tariffs on the basis they haven’t – and don’t plan on – announcing retaliatory tariffs like China has.

His post to Truth Social continued: “Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs, and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90-day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10 percent, also effective immediately.”
Every cloud, eh?

Donald Trump had a savage five-word response to a reporter after the president discovered the media outlet he works for.
There’s no doubt the Republican president is certainly unconventional compared to many of his predecessors, and just taking a look at some of his media appearances makes that pretty apparent.
The cameras are often present in the Oval Office as Trump announces new policy changes to the world, but that isn’t the only place the media follow the president around.
The Republican president spoke to the media on Capitol Hill after his ‘beautiful bill’ meeting with his party on Tuesday (20 May).
A journalist from NOTUS asked: “Andy Harris said that you didn’t adequately convince enough people to vote for the bill?”
Trump then replied asking the reporter what publication he worked for, to which he replied NOTUS.
“Who? I don’t even know what the hell that is. Get yourself a real job,” the president replied. Ouch.
NOTUS describes itself as ‘a new Washington publication from the nonprofit, nonpartisan Allbritton Journalism Institute’, with the publication focusing its coverage on US politics.
“It is produced by a newsroom of experienced journalists and emerging reporters, and is funded by donors and grants,” a description of the publication reads.
The yet another infamous Trump media interaction has gone viral on Twitter, as one person commented: “Another banger, I fear.”
A second added: “Trump’s dismissal of the NOTUS reporter shows his contempt for smaller media outlets.” While a third remarked: “Classic Trump.”
It comes just weeks after Trump shut down a journalist with a brutal seven-word response after a microphone hit him in the face.
The extended could be seen touching Trump’s mouth and sliding across his face during a live broadcast, and he even attempted to lean back to stop it from touching him further.

Awkward… (FOX)
The miscalculated effort to capture Trump’s voice saw the president get the brunt of the equipment, causing him to glare at the interviewee.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Trump was quick to make a comment after the fuzzy mic touched his face.
He was heard stating: “She just became a big story tonight… She just made television tonight.”
While the 47th POTUS appeared to be upset over the mishap, he also went on to look amused as he initially looked unimpressed with the reporter, before raising his eyebrows and then laughing.
