The Obama family experienced the passing of Marian Robinson, Michelle Obama’s mother.
Robinson, who resided in the White House throughout her son-in-law’s presidency and introduced a sense of ‘normalcy’ into the lives of her granddaughters, Sasha and Malia, passed away at the age of 86.

Her family released a statement indicating that she passed away in a state of tranquility.
In her roles as a sister, aunt, cousin, neighbor, and friend to many, she was cherished beyond expression by numerous individuals whose lives were enriched by her presence, according to the statement from the Obamas and the Robinsons.
She departed peacefully this morning, and at this moment, we are all uncertain about how we will continue without her.
The former first lady honored the woman she referred to as ‘her pillar.’
My mother, Marian Robinson, was my unwavering support, consistently present for all my needs. She provided the same reliable foundation for our entire family, and it is with great sorrow that we announce her passing today,” Michelle shared on X.
Barack Obama stated, “There has been and will always be only one Marian Robinson. In our grief, we find solace in the remarkable legacy of her life. We will dedicate the remainder of our lives to emulating her example.”
The Bidens expressed their heartfelt sympathies.
Mrs. Marian Robinson was recognized as a dedicated mother and grandmother, embodying a profound and unwavering affection for her family. Through the gift of her friendship, we experienced that love firsthand, evident in every gentle smile and heartfelt embrace she offered us,” Joe and Jill shared.
Marian Robinson, originally named Marian Lois Shields, was born in 1937 on the South Side of Chicago. She wed Fraser Robinson, and together they had two children, Michelle and Craig. Fraser succumbed to multiple sclerosis in 1991 after a prolonged struggle with the disease.
Robinson played an engaged role in her children’s education, providing support at every stage of their journey.
In a May 7 episode of the podcast IMO, co-hosted by Michelle Obama and her brother, she reflected on her husband’s remarks following her mother’s death: ‘You are the next in line.’
“The unfortunate reality of adulthood is that when one loses their parents, they are next in line to assume responsibility,” Michelle remarked regarding her transition into the role of the family’s matriarch. “In light of my mother’s passing, I am grateful to have you as my elder brother and a husband who is also older.”
Barack remarked, ‘You are the next in line.’ To which I responded, ‘I do not feel adequately prepared to take that position.’ I then told him, ‘You are next, and Craig follows. I entrust that responsibility to you,’ she humorously added.
